Sealants and Fluoride

Sealants

A sealant is a preventive dental treatment that may be recommended to protect teeth from decay. A dental sealant is a tooth-colored resin material, which is painted into the grooves on the chewing surface of teeth. By blocking out the bacteria and food debris that lead to tooth decay, the sealant prevents decay and cavities. Sealants also make these areas easier to keep clean and healthy with routine tooth brushing.

Fluoride

Another preventative treatment that we provide is Fluoride therapy to help keep your enamel strong and resistant to damage or decay. Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in water and many foods. Fluoride therapies can help remineralize enamel that has been weakened, decrease sensitivity, protect exposed tooth root surfaces, and are helpful for patients who are at high risk for developing cavities/decay. Fluoride can be painted on your teeth in the form of a varnish at your regular dental cleanings. For patients who are at high risk for developing cavities or have a dry mouth, our team may recommend a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste for use at home.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a beneficial dental treatment because it helps stop the progression of cavities and can even prevent the need for more invasive procedures. It works by strengthening and remineralizing the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. SDF contains silver, which acts as an antibacterial agent, and fluoride, which helps rebuild enamel. The treatment is quick, painless, and non-invasive, making it a great option for children, elderly patients, or those with special needs who may have difficulty undergoing traditional treatments. Plus, it’s cost-effective and can help manage decay in areas that are hard to treat, reducing the need for fillings or extractions.
