As dentists we try to help out patients avoid the need to remove a tooth whenever possible. However, certain conditions may make tooth extraction the most appropriate option. Some extractions can be completed in our office while other times a referral to a local oral surgeon may be recommended or required.
Several conditions may necessitate tooth extraction. Among these are:
- Severe infection or advanced gum disease that has destroyed a significant portion of the tooth and/or supporting bone and gum structure
- Serious decay or cracks that have damaged a tooth beyond repair, making a successful repair impossible
- Crowding caused by too many teeth to properly fit in the mouth (commonly wisdom teeth).
For patients who intend to replace a tooth, or even multiple teeth that need to be extracted, our dentists can recommend options for improved healing of your gums and jaw bone that will allow you to keep your options for tooth replacement open and return to good health and good function as quickly as possible. Some tooth replacement options could include dental implant(s), fixed bridges, partial dentures, or full dentures. We are happy to provide you with information about tooth replacement options to keep you smiling.
